New Yarns Now Available!

We just received a new shipment of Malabrigo. I decided to expand the collection to include the really lovely Malabrigo Silky Merino. This is really nice stuff, extremely soft with a nice drape after knitting. We also added some of the Malabrigo Sock Yarn, you have to come by the store to see the beautiful colors.

We also have a new Alpaca yarn. It is from a small family owned alpaca farm and mill in Utah. It is called Country Comfy Yarns. We have the Bulky and Sport weight versions of their yarn. The yarn is spun unevenly for a slight thick thin effect and the yarn is not dyed, it is the color of the actual alpaca. Once you see it you will fall in love.

As always, thanks so much for all of your support, and Happy Knitting!

Construction Update...

We are getting close to the end of the road construction!  It is hard to believe, I have become so accustom to it I'm not sure what I will do when it is over.  No more left hand turns into the store, the best way to get here is to be heading East on Indian School Rd and turn right into the parking lot.  However, if you are heading West on Indian School, then turn left onto 78th Street, then turn right into the ally behind the store and then turn right into the parking lot from there.  Thank you all for continuing to support Knit Happens even thought it has been tough getting in.  I really appreciate it!  CJ

Final Summer Sale

I have been informed by several loyal customers, that some of you are only receiving the "construction signs" but no information explaining what the sale is about. I hate it when "knit" like that happens!! I am doing my best to get the bugs worked out of the system, please be patient with me.

So, for those of you who don't know, Today September 4th and Saturday September 5th we are having our FINAL Summer Sale. I need to make room for the new yarns arriving, so I have decided to give a 25% discount to anything, yes ANYTHING, (except classes) in the store that is not already on sale. I hope you can take a little time to come in and take advantage of the discount!

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Ok, it has been way too long since we have had an update, let me just quickly say that it was an unfortunate password issue that we just got resolved yesterday.  Knit does happen, even to me.
I would like to take this time to sincerely thank those of you that have braved the construction and the heat to continue supporting Knit Happens!  It has not gone un-noticed and is greatly appreciated!
Now, on to the good stuff, new yarn has arrived!  We now have:
  • Granite by Nashua, it is 70% wool, 30% acrylic, beautifully dyed yarn 3.75 to 4 sts per inch.
  • Paradise by Nashua, it is 48% wool & 48% alpaca 4% nylon which again is 3.75 to 4 sts to the inch in solid colors.
  • The new Gedifra line is in... all I can say is WOW!  True to Gedifra style, the patterns are stunning and the new yarns are gorgeous!
  • Our new sock yarns include Regia's "flusi" sock yarn, brand new this season!  It is the same great 4 ply Regia sock yarn only in fun new colors.
  • We also now have Best Foot Forward sock yarn by Nashua.
I have decided to continue with weekly yarn sales until Labor Day.  We need space for new yarns that are arriving daily.
Also, the Fall Class Schedule is now posted on the blog, and is in the store, be sure to sign up early to secure your space.  Don't forget, once you are paid in full for a class, you will receive 15% off all yarns not already on sale until your class is over.
As a final note and update, Mary is doing well, home resting... well at least she is suppose to be resting, but I think we can all relate to how hard that can be at times.  She is looking forward to returning to Knit Happens, as we are looking forward to having her back in the game!  I will keep you all posted as to when that will be.  Barbie will be back with us soon from the islands off of Seattle.  She spent her summer walking her loving dogs by the beach, sewing seeds, composting and making everything beautiful, just the way Barbie does to everything she touches.  Emily started taking classes at ASU this week, so she will be in the store less... we will miss her, but support higher education.  The rest of us, Viki, Debi and I are plugging away and looking forward to seeing all of you in the store soon.
For now, fair well and happy knitting,
CJ Peloso

STORE ACCESS

If you have been by the store lately, you will notice that the city now has blocked off the front entrance to our store completely.  You can still park on 78th and walk through the alley into the store, or come through the alley turn into our parking lot and park there.  We again apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for continuing to make your way into the store!

SUMMER SALE

Believe it or not summer is almost over - well, summer as far as school is concerned anyway.  I cant believe that my youngest is starting her senior year at high school in just a week.  It is strange to think of summer being over when it is still in the 100 degree temperature range.  I remember going to school in my new WINTER   outfit - but I digress!

As a final incentive before your schedule starts to fill up driving kids from place to place; come in and take adavantage of our DEBBIE BLISS SALE!  That's right!  CJ decided to put the following Debbie Bliss  yarns
on special starting Tuesday July 21 - Saturday July 25.

Choose from the following:

Debbie Bliss Pure Silk - 35% off

Debbie Bliss Cashmerino - DK, Aran and Chunky - 40% off

Debbie Bliss Rialto - 4ply, DK and Aran - 50% off

New Arrivals

We are beginning to get in some of the orders that CJ placed in the last month or so.  For Lantern Moon enthusiasts we have just received  40" long circular needles in both ebony and rosewood in every size.   The longest length we have carried to date has been 32 inch - so for those wider projects this length will be perfect.  As always the needles are lovely, the cable stays straight and the needles turn on the cable so no twisting!

Last winter we began carrying Susuan Todd Bags.  They proved to be very popular and we sold out rather quickly.  Well, they're back!  They are called "The Recycled Bag" - made out of recycled knitted sweaters and are beautifully made.  You can be green and have a great bag at the same time!  Each bag is made from a number of different sweaters in either plain or fancy designs, fully lined with pockets for all your supplies - several sizes available.   Check them out before they disappear.

We have also received Namaste bags and needle cases.  Check out the various styles and colors.

Finally CJ managed to get a special deal on a yarn from Jojoland called Baritone.  For only $3.00 a ball you get a 100% wool, worsted weight yarn.  This would be great to make into a great sweater for colder climates or use as a felting yarn.  Many great colors available - but once it's gone it's gone - so get it while you can.

4th of July Sale Extended

It's just after 2:00 p.m. on July 4th and man are we tired!  This is good news for you!  We are too tired to even think about packing up the yarn - so CJ has decided to just leave the yarn on sale for another week.  That's right!  If you missed the sale or wish you had purchased more - come on in.
The only downside of this is is that our usual service of winding yarn may be curtailed somewhat during this time.  We will try our best to wind yarn for you but we may have to ask you to come back to the store to give us a bit of extra time to get it done.

Road Construction - latest

It seems that construction is changing day by day in front of the store. As of Saturday afternoon the city opened 78th street. You can now come into the store on the dirt road following the cones or park along 78th street. The city has also posted Business Access signs. Of course this may all be changed when we go back to work on Tuesday - but we hope 78th will stay open through the July 4th sale. Dont forget that the Knit In will still be on
Thursday evening during the sale - so come and knit and look over the sale selection.

Thanks and we will keep you as up to date as we can.

ACCESS TO STORE

The road in front of the store has now been torn up - so much for notice from the city!  Knit continues to Happen!  While it looks like a mess, there is still access to the store off of Indian School Road.  All traffic has been moved to the north side of the street.  You cannot turn onto 78th street from Indian School.  However, you can turn left onto Kalarama which is one block to the west of the store.  From there you can travel on the dirt in front of the businesses immediately to our west and enter our parking lot.

If you don't want to travel on the dirt or on Indian School Road follow the directions in the last blog notice. This will take you the back way to 78th street.  From there you can either park on 78th or take the alley to our parking lot.

If you get completely lost, give us a call and we will be more than happy to direct you.  Our number is 480-941-3898.

In the meantime, Knit - It's Hot!

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

The City of Scottsdale just informed us that beginning Monday, June 22 traffic will be switched from the south to the north  side of Indian School Road in front of our store.  Access to the store will be maintained.

At some point the road in front of the store will be ripped up.  At that time it may be necessary for us to close the store for a short time until access can be restored.  We will try our best to keep you informed as far in advance as possible.  Continue to check the blog for updates on this situation.

To avoid the construction take Osborn to Miller, turn west on E Main, North on E 1st St. and follow around to 78th st.  Park along 78 th street.

Thanks again for your patience.

News Channel 10 Broadcast

Several weeks ago we told you that News Channel 10 was coming out to film us during one of our knit-ins.  It was broadcast on Thursday, June 11 on the 9 p.m. news.  Lots of people have responded to the segment commenting on how wonderful the store looked.  It has also brought in many new people to the store.  For those of you who missed it just go to the News Channel 10 website - look at previous broadcasts and click on Knit Happens.  We want to thank Channel 10 for taking the time to come to our store.  They did a terrific job with the segment.

Why all the Sales???

We have had several people ask us why we are putting on all of the 50% off sales over the summer.  It's true that sales at some knitting stores is not a common place occurrence.  However, CJ's philosophy with Knit Happens is that she intends on keeping new yarns coming in to the store to offer our customers the best in selection.  She wants to have the latest trends in yarns and patterns and to accomplish this we need to clear out some stock to  make way for new things for the fall season.  As we told you, CJ is at TNNA making purchases for the fall and winter.  We simply need space in the store to add these new yarns and  we want to offer our customers not only the best and freshest selection but great value as well.  So don't worry - we're not going anywhere - we're just continuing to make this the best knitting store in town!

Fountain Hills Group

Twice a month a wonderful group of ladies comes and hangs out with us here at Knit Happens.  They are known to us as "The Fountain Hills Group".  An energetic group of knitters and crocheters that number anywhere from 10 to 20 or more depending on the time of year.  These great ladies knit mostly for charities such as Sojourner House and the Linus Project.  Every time they come to the store they bring with them all their completed work and we have a great show and tell session.

On behalf of those of us at Knit Happens that have come to love these generous and kind women, we would like to thank these ladies for their community support and their efforts in making the world a warmer place.  You've certainly warmed our hearts!

If you would like to join these women they are always welcoming to new people (whether from Fountain Hills or not) - so give us a call and we will let you know the next time they are here in the store.

ECO FRIENDLY YARNS HAVE ARRIVED

At Knit Happens, we try to be as green as possible in making our yarn selections.  To that end we have just received the new Debbie Bliss Eco Cotton.  This yarn was featured in the Spring Summer 2009 Debbie Bliss Magazine.  The yarn is manufactured from organic cotton using nontoxic dyes.  The water for the dyeing process is then recycled into drinkable water.   Read more about it in the magazine.  The yarn is 18 sts per inch on a US size 7 needle.  We have a great color selection from which to choose.

ALOO Fiber

Also new to our store is Aloo Fiber.  This is a yarn made from the Aloo plant native to Nepal.  The yarn has great exfoliating properties and we have made up a Spa Bath Mit and Washcloth kit.  Available as well is a kit for making a great bag out of this versatile yarn.  We have only purchased a limited quantity of this yarn - so check it out soon.

Allright...... Knit Happens!

NEW SUMMER HOURS

The summer is typically a slow time for yarn stores. Our winter visitors have gone and permanent residents escape the city every chance they get! Even so, yarn addicts need their fix of yarn and we will be here to fill your knitting and crochet needs. Having said that, we are going to be adjusting our hours for the slower summer months. Make a note:

STARTING MAY 4, 2009

CLOSED SUNDAY AND MONDAY

TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY
OPEN
10:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M.

SUMMER CLASS SCHEDULE

Our summer class schedule has been printed and available at the store. You can download the PDF file - look at the sidebar and click on Summer Class Schedule.

We will be offering the usual Beginning Knitting and a new Knitting Refresher for those who have knit in the past and would like to pick it up again. Mary will not be offering her popular Intermediate Class in its usual 4 week format. This summer she has broken the class into several 1 and 2 hour workshops such as Finishing Workshop, Kitchner Stitch, Learn to Knit Cables, Finishing and Fixing Mistakes.

Lace knitting has become very popular again and Mary and CJ are offering two lace classes. Mary attended a workshop with Amy Singer, author of "No Sheep For You", and learned how to do the Tuscany Shawl that is featured in the book. This is a terrific shawl for both the new lace knitter and anyone allergic to wool as it is made with silk, cotton or a blend. The shawl is on display at the store.

CJ will be teaching the Undulating Waves Scarf. Again, this lace class will be aimed at the new lace knitter and features a very simple lace repeat. You will learn how to read a basic chart and use yarn overs and knit two togethers to create this lovely pattern. The scarf is on display at the store.

Sock knitters will be able to learn how to knit socks on two circular needles or take a class on how to knit a baby sock in 4 hours using double pointed needles - or, do both!

Chris will offer two classes this summer. The first one is making knitted or crocheted jewlery chains and the other is crocheting a shopping bag out of left over recycled bags. Both classes will be fun and informative.

Claudette will over her popular Beginning Crochet class again and this summer will be teaching you how to crochet a cute poncho.

Finally, every Friday afternoon, Mary, CJ and Kathy will be available during Friday Afternoon Drop In. New this summer we are offering a drop in session where you will be able to sit and knit, meet new friends and get problems resolved. Be sure to join us.

Indian School Road Construction

Beginning roughly April 20, Indian School Road, West of Hayden to Drinkwater Blvd. will be under construction. The City will be beginning with the North side of the street closing two lanes and diverting all traffic to the two lanes on our side of the street. Later that process will reverse. You will still have access to the store from Indian School Road or 78th street (the street immediately to the East of the store). If you turn south on 78th street take the first left into the laneway behind the store. The covered parking lot to the west of the store can be accessed from the laneway. Parking will still be available in our lot, along 78th street and the access road in front of the store (as long as construction allows).

We apologize for the inconvenience this construction will cause our customers and hope that it will not result in a decision not to visit the store. We will do our best to keep you updated via the blog and will have business access and store signs posted in as many locations as possible to make your access as painless as possible. Thank you for understanding and for your continued support.

Teva Durham Trunk Show Here

Teva Durham is a knitwear designer that creates fabulous designs for Tahki Stacy Charles, Inc. We just received a trunk show of all the designs she has in Volume 3 of the Loop-d-loop book. Please come in to the store to see how she has used yarns such as 'moss', 'shale', 'tundra', 'fern' and 'river' to create fabulous looks that you may want to try. Dont miss the Fair Ise Cropped Hooded vest and Shorts outfit or the little black dress in 'shale'.

CJ On the Mend

Some of you know that the last few months have not been the greatest for CJ. Just before Thanksgiving she fell and broke her wrist; three weeks ago she had her gall bladder removed. Happily she is home again and on the road to recovery. She spends and hour or so in the store every day and hopes to be back in full time within the next week or so. Thanks to all of you who sent her cards and get well wishes.

Great Start to New Year!

In this time of recession it has been somewhat nerve wrecking opening a new business. But thanks to CJ's vision and our staff's belief in both her and the store; we are so happy to report that Knit Happens continues to thrive and grow. Every day we meet new customers; both local and from all over the country; who do nothing but exclaim how impressive the store is in its layout, stock, and ambiance. Customers tell us they feel a wonderful sense of welcoming calm when they come in. That feeling is due in large part to the terrific staff we have working here at the store. They all do their best to be as helpful and friendly as possible and to make your time in the store a pleasure.

Of course we have had our fair share of growing pains and this continues to be a learning experience for all of us. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your time in the store a more enjoyable one. Never hesitate to talk to Mary or CJ if you have any problems we can help to resolve.

New Stuff

New books continue to arrive almost daily. We have recently received "French Girl Knits" - honestly, every pattern is wonderful - you need to see this book! As well, Knit One Below, Continuous Cables, Knitting Goes Large, and several new novels are here. For mystery lovers Barbara Bretton's Casting Spells is a must read. We have a great selection of basic knitting books for beginners as well as stand by favorites like Knitting Without Tears by Elizabeth Zimmerman.

Speaking of Elizabeth Zimmerman, we will be offering the Baby Surprise Jacket Class again (check our class schedule) and the pattern for the baby and adult jackets are available for purchase.

We are beginning to receive Sirdar yarns and patterns. Check out "Crofter"
an acrylic cotton and wool blend that is a Fair Isle effect dk yarn. Looks like you knitted a fair isle sweater while the yarn has done all the work! We have great patterns for children and adults in this great new yarn.

New colors of Louisa Harding yarns already in stock have arrived. For those of you who love Gedifra - check out the beautiful shawl Mary knitted with Filarosa. This has been so popular that we decided to order two more bags of every color! New yarns arrive daily - so come in often, bring your knitting and join us at the "knitting table".

Classes are very busy and fill up very quickly. Billy's entrelac scarf class was a huge hit - everyone left that evening with their scarves well on the way. Sign up soon for his next class as well as for his felted clog class. If there are classes you would like to see that are not on our list - or if you are a teacher and have an idea of something you would like to teach at the store - come in and talk to CJ or Mary.
